Muscat, April 15 (IANS) An Indian woman, who was jailed last year for killing her drunk husband, will be released from jail on compassionate grounds and deported from Oman.
The 40-year-old woman, who worked as a teacher in a school in Sur city in northeastern Oman, was arrested after her 49-year-old husband’s unnatural death Oct 25 last year, the Times of Oman reported Tuesday.
Her two daughters also study in the same school.
The Appeals Court in Sur commuted the jail term of the woman from the earlier five year term to six months on compassionate grounds as her daughters are minor.
The court took into consideration her current predicament and a mercy petition filed by her children and other family members.
The mother will be released April 24 on completion of the six-month term.
“Initially, the court sentenced the accused to a five-year jail term, but later, taking into consideration the woman’s current predicament and a mercy petition filed by her children and other family members, the court commuted the jail term to six months,” Khalid Al Najashi, the advocate of the woman, was quoted as telling.
The victim was found dead in the room when police arrived on the scene, the report said.
The teacher had stabbed her husband, who was in a drunken state, following a brawl.
“The victim was an alcoholic. We helped him frequently in reaching home since he used to be excessively drunk. He landed in trouble many times after being caught for drunken driving,” a family friend was quoted as saying in an earlier report.
