Veteran actor SIR MICHAEL CAINE has reneged on his threat to quit his native Britain if the government raises taxes again – he has promised to stay in the U.K. for the sake of his grandchildren.
The Alfie star was left fuming when politicians announced in April (09) new plans to raise income tax to 50 per cent for those who earn more than $217,500 (£150,000) a year.
Caine was so infuriated by the proposals he pledged to move to America if British taxes are raised again.
But now he’s decided he couldn’t bear to be apart from his daughter Natasha and her young son Taylor – especially as she is about to become a mum again, expecting twins later this month (Sep09).
He says, “Being grandad is my best role yet. As a dad of two daughters, I have never had a son. So Taylor has been a double whammy. It’s as if he is my grandson and my son. He also looks like me. So am I going to walk out on him and two more grandchildren for the sake of 10 per cent of my income? No chance.”
