New Delhi, Sep 1 (Inditop.com) Tourism destinations need to package themselves attractively to attract tourists repeatedly to India, Tourism Minister Kumari Selja said Tuesday.

Inaugurating the fortnight-long Ladakh Festival at Leh, she said it was imperative that destinations diversify their products to allow the tourist to experience the real customs and heritage of local communities.

“Destinations that do not gear up to this fact are in danger of letting destination fatigue setting in, and such destinations that do not upgrade their products are in danger of losing out in attracting repeat visitors,” she said.

The minister hoped that the Ladakh festival will allow the tourists to experience the real culture of the region.

Noting that India had so much to offer in terms of its culture and natural beauty, Selja said: “No one can take in all that India offers in one visit and tourists must return to India repeatedly to experience different tourism products.”

She said that tourists these days like to sample the local culture and heritage and not just do “conservative sightseeing trips”.

She said adventure and rural tourism could be some of the focus areas.

“We are keen to assist the (Jammu and Kashmir) government in exploiting, exploring and promoting tourism in the region,” she said.

Ladakh was thrown open to domestic and foreign tourists in 1974. Till Aug 15 this year, 21,467 foreigners and 37,870 domestic travellers have toured Ladakh.
