Actor/director-turned-movie mogul TYLER PERRY is to write, direct and produce the film adaptation of NTOZAKE SHANGE’s controversial 1975 play FOR COLORED GIRLS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED SUICIDE WHEN THE RAINBOW IS ENUF.

It will be the first project for Perry’s 34th Street Films production company.

The play hit the headlines last year (08) when Whoopi Goldberg’s planned revival hit a stumbling block over financing.

The actress/comedienne blasted ignorant financiers for delaying the opening of her Broadway production by pulling out over concerns about the title.

Goldberg, who was among the producers of the show, said, “We had a couple of major donors who didn’t look at the title.

“They said, ‘We can’t say for coloured girls or suicide – we certainly can’t say them in the same sentence.’ I was like, ‘Did you not know this play?'”

Perry plans to start shooting the movie in Atlanta, Georgia in November (09)
