Jakarta, Sep 5 (Xinhua) The 7.3-magnitude earthquake that jolted Indonesia’s West Java Wednesday has killed 70 people and wounded 966 while 32 are still missing, the national Antara news agency reported Saturday.
Rano Harjaya, an official from the coordinating unit of the West Java Disaster Mitigation Service, said that most of the dead, wounded and missing victims were from Cianjur of West Java.
By now, rescue workers have found 25 bodies in Cianjur, including the latest found buried by rocks about 30 metres deep. The body was found with the help of heavy-duty equipment and was handed over to his family. Rescue workers still continued searching 32 other missing victims believed to be buried by the quake-triggered avalanches.
A powerful earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale shook West Java Wednesday at 2.55 p.m. West Indonesia iime (WIB), causing people as far as Jakarta to panic. The quake’s epicentre was located at 8.24 degrees southern latitude and 107.32 degrees eastern longitude.
