New Delhi, Sep 9 (Inditop.com) A watch gifted to late prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri during the historic Tashkent conference in 1966 has been stolen from a building named after him, police said Wednesday.
Thieves broke into the Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial here on Sep 3 and fled with the golden watch, police said. The memorial is located next to Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s high security residence.
“The incident took place last week, but it was reported three days after that. The only item stolen was his watch. At the moment we can’t pinpoint who has committed the crime,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) S. Das told Inditop.
The watch was gifted to Shastri by his Russian counterpart, Alexei Kosygin, during the Tashkent conference in 1966 that marked the end of an India-Pakistan war. Shastri died soon after signing the Tashkent Declaration.
Confirming the incident, his son Anil Shastri said: “The matter has been reported to police… They have taken fingerprints and are conducting investigations.”
