Lucknow, Sep 9 (Inditop.com) A bank manager was held captive for nearly 12 hours in his office by farmers in an Uttar Pradesh village for allegedly demanding a bribe to issue their Kisan Credit Card (KCC), police said Wednesday.

Angry farmers in Barsera village in Bareilly district Tuesday barged inside the office of a Punjab National Bank (PNB) branch manager. The farmers roughed up the official and later tied him to his chair him with ropes, police added.

“The farmers were just not willing to free the bank manager Bhuvneshwar Agarwal. After holding the bank manager captive, the farmers locked the gates, allowing no one to enter the bank,” Inspector Mahesh Prasad told IANS by phone.

“Their (farmers) protest continued till night. It was only after the assurance of the additional district magistrate to get an enquiry conducted against the bank manager, that the farmers released him,” added Prasad. Bareilly is about 300 km from here.

Police have not registered a case against the farmers.

Formulated by the National Bank for Rural and Agriculture Development (NABARD), the KCC aims at providing farmers the facility of purchasing agricultural inputs including seeds, fertilisers and pesticides on the basis of their land holding.

The card also provides financial assistance to farmers to enable them to purchase modern agricultural appliances and adopt mechanised farming techniques.
