Kolkata, April 7 (IANS) A catalogue of 108 paintings by renowned Indian painter Gaganendranath Tagore has been brought out by the Victoria Memorial Hall, an official said on Tuesday.
Gaganendranath (1867-1938), along with his younger brother Abanindranath, was a foundational figure in the history of modern Indian art.
The catalogue, titled ‘Gaganendranath Tagore: A Retrospective’, contains 108 colour reproductions of Gaganendranath’s paintings on various genres, and is an offshoot of an exhibition that Victoria Memorial Hall did in collaboration with Rabindra Bharati Society in 2012, said its curator and secretary Jyanta Sengupta.
The catalogue includes the Chaitanya Charitmala series, Mahabharata scenes and Himalayan landscapes, satirical drawings and caricatures among others.
The VMH currently houses a landmark exhibition of 123 paintings (including the famed ‘Bharat Mata’ and ‘The Passing of Shah Jahan’) by Abanindranath, Sengupta said.
Launched on Monday, the catalogue, priced at Rs. 600, is on sale for enthusiasts.
