Chennai, April 16 (IANS) Four newborn babies lost their lives at the government medical hospital in Villupuram, Tamil Nadu, and not eight as reported by some media, a senior official said on Thursday.
“Four pre-term babies lost their lives due to health complications. It is wrong to say eight babies died,” Usha Sadasivam, dean of government Villupuram medical hospital told IANS over phone.
Villupuram is around 170 km from here.
According to Sadasivam, the babies were under-weight.
She said the mothers’ ages were in the range of 18-27 and were largely under-nourished.
Sadasivam said as a preventive measure the expecting mothers are advised to consult doctors well in advance on having a proper nutritious diet.
She refuted the possibilities of any infections or negligence in treatment.
