New Delhi, May 6 (IANS) Jamia Millia Islamia received a record 1,49,148 applications for over 6,000 seats in the academic year 2015-16, the central university said in a statement on Wednesday.

This is almost a 25 percent increase in the number of applications received last year. These applications are for over 240 courses such as M.Phil/Postgraduate/Undergraduate/Diploma/Certificate in nine faculties, 39 departments and many teaching and research centres.
B.Tech turned out to the most sought-after course for which the largest numbers of 39,654 were received, the statement said.
Another course, diploma engineering, was also very popular with 10,633 applications.
Bachelor of dental surgery (6,603), B.A. L.L.B.(Hons.)(4,543), bachelor of physiotherapy (1,199) were some other popular courses.
Other regular courses in social sciences, humanities and languages, natural sciences have also witnessed an upsurge in applications.
The newly-introduced courses have evinced great interest against the applicants.
The postgraduate programme in gender studies has received 205 applications, M.Sc. in biophysics (57) and advanced diploma in public health (46), and diploma in disaster management (194).
“The response from the female students was quite heartening,” Mukesh Ranjan, media coordinator, Jamia, told IANS.
Altogether 33,077 applications were received from the female students against 73,865 male applicants.
There are two transgender applicants. It may be noted that the university has introduced the transgender option in the gender column of its online admission form this year
The maximum numbers of applications have come from Uttar Pradesh (36,407) followed by Delhi (34729).
Applications have been received from places as far as Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.
Till date 101 applications have been received from other countries. This figure is likely to go up as the last date for foreign applicants is May 15, 2015.
The Entrance Test for over 240 courses will be conducted across 12 cities which include Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Calicut, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna, Ranchi and Srinagar.
The registration process of admission had commenced on April 13 and was over on May 4.
