Tripoli, May 6 (IANS) Five people were killed and 15 others injured in clashes between Libyan army forces and Islamist militias of Libya Dawn in Libya, according to a military source.
“Violent clashes took place between the Libya army and the tribal army against Libya Dawn militias in Al-Agrabia area, 100 km west of Tripoli. We managed to progress and force them to retreat,” a source in the Libyan army’s operation chamber told Xinhua.
“The attack killed two of our troops and injured four others,” the source said, adding that three fighters of the Islamist militias were killed and 10 others were seriously injured.
Tripoli fell to Libya Dawn last August. The armed Islamist coalition established its own government to confront the internationally recognised one, currently in exile in the town of Tobruk.
Although the UN brokered several rounds of peace talks between the opposing parties last September, clashes continue unabated.
Pro-government forces have been trying to regain control of Tripoli from Libya Dawn militias since March.
