Gurgaon, May 17 (IANS) In an attempt to clean the veritable Augean stables within his own department, Gurgaon police chief Nardeep Singh Virk has initiated action against two senior officers, it was announced on Sunday.
Sunil Kumar, Station House Officer (SHO) of Sohna has been arrested on corruption charges. Another officer Navin Kumar, chief of DFL-Phase II police station, was suspended for “failing to maintain law and order”, a top police official said.
At the orders of Gurgaon Police Commissioner Virk, Sunil Kumar was arrested as soon as a case was registered by Sohna’s Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
“On the directions of Sunil Kumar, two civilians were extorting money from dumpers and trucks in the area. The SHO extorted money illegally from overloaded dumpers and allowed them to move with the area of his jurisdiction,” Police Commissioner Virk said in his order initiating action against the two officers.
“Naveen Kumar has been suspended with immediate effect as he failed to control crime, specially vehicle thefts, in his jurisdiction,” Virk said in his order.
The order read: “Until May 15 this year, 101 cases of vehicle theft have come to the light in DLF-2 area. Last year, around the same time, the number stood at 32. Out of the total 102 percent rise in the whole commissionerate (23 police stations), DLF-2 police station alone accounts for more than 50 percent.”
Earlier, locals and traders had staged a protest and blocked traffic in Sohna after two people were gunned down by unidentified assailants. Sunil Kumar was in-charge of Sohna when the killings happened. He has been sent to police lines and would face regular departmental inquiry by ACP DLF.
“We are committed to fulfilling our commitments for zero tolerance on corruption and better policing in the city,” Virk said.
