Moncton(Canada), June 14 (IANS) Underdogs Colombia stunned France 2-0 in one of the biggest upsets in Women’s World Cup history.
The Colombians opened the scoring in the 19th minute during the match on Saturday when Lady Andrade broke free from a pair of defenders for a tap-in goal, Xinhua news agency reported.
Catalina Usme sealed her country’s first World Cup win with a goal on the counter attack in the 93rd minute.
“We started the match well. They (Colombia) scored against the run of play and things went downhill from there,” said France coach Philippe Bergeroo.
In the second half, France came close to scoring several times but thanks to the play of goalkeeper Sandra Sepulveda, Colombia’s backline remained safe.
“We have proved that we are not just here to make up the numbers. We knew that we’d have to play intelligently and fight for every ball,” said Colombia coach Fabian Taborda.
France will play against Mexico on Wednesday, while the Colombians face England.
