Seoul, June 18 (IANS) A US soldier died during a training exercise in South Korea, the United States Forces Korea (USFK) said in a statement on Thursday.
An inquiry is under way but the cause of the death remains unknown, Efe news agency reported.
Michael William Corey, who joined the US military last year, “died while conducting land navigation training at Camp Jackson” on Monday, the statement said.
The body of Corey, an intelligence analyst stationed in Japan, was found by Korean residents near the military base in South Korea.
Corey was deployed to Camp Jackson for a series of courses and exercises.
The US maintains around 28,500 troops in South Korea, a country it is committed to defend in case of a conflict with North Korea, since the Korean War (1950-53) which divided the Korean peninsula into two.
