Berlin, June 24 (IANS) Mainz have recruited Switzerland international midfielder Fabian Frei with immediate effect, the Bundesliga club confirmed on Wednesday.
The “Nullfuenfer” reacted thus on the departure of youngster midfielder Johannes Geis, who joined Bundesliga rivals Schalke earlier Tuesday, as Frei and Mainz agreed on a four-year deal, until June 2019, Xinhua news agency reported.
“Fabian Frei was a desired candidate in case something would change in our squad. We are pleased that we have won him him for us.
“With his signing we get a defensive as well as offensive experienced midfielder who has strategic qualities and a very good game overview. We are convinced that he fits perfectly into our team,” Mainz’ manager Christian Heidel said.
The 26-year-old midfielder played since 2007 for FC Basel, including a two-year loan spell in St. Gallen. He made overall 235 top-flight appearances to provide 42 assists and 29 goals.
Frei also gained international experience as he played 23 UEFA Champions League and 24 UEFA Europa League games.
“I am happy that the transfer worked out smoothly. I am really looking forward to the new challenge, to play every weekend on the Bundesliga level,” Frei said.
Mainz’ new arrival made his international debut for Switzerland in October 2011. Since then he scored one goal in five caps.
Mainz completed the last Bundesliga season on the 11th place of the standings.
