New Delhi, Sep 24 (Inditop.com) Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Thursday expressed his sympathy with the families of those killed and injured in a chimney collapse at a power plant of Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd (Balco) in Chhattisgarh Wednesday.

“I hope the management of the company will generously come to the aid of the bereaved families as well as the kith and kin of those injured labourers. I am sure the state government will do all its best in this hour of need,” Advani said in a statement.

Chhattisgarh is one of the five states ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

As many as 50 workers were suspected to be trapped under the debris of the 100-metre chimney, whose only bottom six metres are now standing.

Sterlite Industries (India) Ltd holds 51 percent stake in Balco and the remaining 49 percent is held by the Indian government. Sterlite is investing heavily to double its production capacity. Balco presently produces 345,000 tonnes aluminium per annum.

Officials say the under-construction thermal plant – of two units of 600 MW each – is aimed at generating power to help Balco achieve its increased production target.
