New Delhi, Oct 30 (Inditop.com) India’s stand of asking developed countries to bear the burden for combating global warming was “not unreasonable”, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Friday ahead of the UN conference on climate change in Copenhagen, and asserted that India would fulfil its international obligations.
“We will approach the international negotiations on global warming, climate change and carbon emissions as responsible global citizens,” Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit here.
“We will fulfill our obligations to nature and to humanity consistent with our commitment to the welfare and well-being of our people, and the poor of the world,” he said.
“Equally, we expect the developed nations, and those who have so far drawn unduly on nature’s bounty to bear their due share of the burdens as well,” he added.
“Ours is not an unreasonable stance. It is based on our world view that the whole world is one family, and on our commitment to the principles of inclusive growth and development,” he stressed.
India has advocated the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities of developed and developing countries for curbing global greenhouse gas emissions and has refused to accept legally binding emission cuts on grounds that it will curb its development.
The climate change conference convened by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), comprising 192 sovereign states, will be held in Copenhagen in December. It is expected to seal a deal to fight climate change after 2012, when the current period of the Kyoto Protocol runs out.
