Rawalpindi, Dec 4 (Inditop.com) At least 10 people were killed and 40 wounded Friday in a terror attack at a mosque where army personnel offer prayers in this Pakistani garrison city.
Ten people died and over 40 were wounded in the suicide blast and firing incident, Online news agency reported.
According to some eyewitnesses, the terrorists threw hand grenades inside the Parade Line mosque while others said that two suicide bombers were present inside the mosque and as soon as the Friday prayers were over, the bombers blew themselves up.
Gunfire broke out following the blasts in the mosque where hundreds of people, including dozens of army personnel, were gathered for the Friday prayers.
Ishtiaq, an eyewitness and driver of an army brigadier, said two back-to-back blasts rocked the mosque as the prayers concluded.
“The brigadier and his son had entered the mosque while I was being searched by the guards when I heard the first blast and soon
after that a second one,” DPA quoted Ishtiaq as saying.
Army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said that 10 people “were martyred” and more than 40 were wounded.
The terror strike took place at the mosque that is located in the vicinity of the Pakistani Army’s General headquarters where 10 terrorists in military uniform laid siege to it Oct 10. That attack left 19 people dead.
Sodiers and police cordoned off the area around the sprawling walled compound near the mosque that also houses
residential blocks for servicemen and their families.
Another official said that at least six to seven gunmen entered the Parade Line mosque located near Qasim market. They threw hand grenades followed by indiscriminate firing. Security forces officials opened retaliatory fire.
Pakistan has been struck by a series of terror attacks since Oct 5, when the latest wave of violence was unleashed by the Taliban which is battling the army in the rugged terrain of South Waziristan.
Over 250 people have been killed in a spate of terror attacks in various parts of the country since Oct 5.
