Srinagar, Jan 6 (Inditop.com) A policeman was killed and six people were injured Wednesday after fidayeen guerrillas lobbed grenades and fired at Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers at Lal Chowk in the heart of the city here, authorities said.

Among those injured were civilians and a camera-person of a news channel.

Militant outfit Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen (JuM) claimed responsibility for the attack.

Jameel Ahmed, claiming to be the spokesman for JuM, called a local news agency and owned responsibility for the attack, saying that two of its guerrillas launched the attack on the security forces.

The guerrillas had taken shelter in the Punjab Hotel and were firing on the security forces.

Senior police officers and CRPF personnel had reached the spot and the hotel was cordoned off.

The security forces have evacuated people from nearby shops, business establishments and adjacent buildings.

There is a stand-off between the guerrillas and the security forces and the latter are weighing options to storm the building.
