Chandigarh, Jan 8 (Inditop.com) Owing to dense fog and overcast conditions, no flight has either landed or taken off from the Chandigarh airport for the last seven days, an official said here Friday.
Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways have already cancelled their flights from the airport till Jan 10.
An airport official said: “Even today (Friday) we had to cancel all the flights. We are incurring huge losses due to this but we are helpless as Instrument Landing System (ILS), which helps during low visibility times, is lying defunct for the last five months.”
“We are waiting for the clearance from Indian Air Force officials for the installation of new ILS device,” the official added.
Air India, Jet Airways, Go Air, Kingfisher and MDLR are the major airlines that operate from here.
As Chandigarh is considered the gateway to Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, the airport is generally full of activity. Around 15 flights arrive and depart from here everyday.
Foggy weather has derailed normal life and also hit road and rail traffic in this region.
Most of trains were delayed at Chandigarh railway station and hundreds of passengers were seen stranded.
“The situation is very problematic for us. All the trains are reaching late by two to six hours. Due to poor weather, railway authorities have cancelled the operations of Unchahar Express, running between Chandigarh and Allahabad, till Jan 31,” Station Superintendent R.K. Dutta told Inditop.
