Agartala, Feb 24 (Inditop.com) Tripura Police Wednesday seized from an aircraft from New Delhi a huge amount of contraband cough syrup that was to be smuggled to Bangladesh.
“We have seized 20 big trunks containing 4,000 bottles of Phensidyl worth Rs.400,000 from a private passenger airliner. The passenger plane arrived in Agartala from New Delhi via Guwahati,” said police officer Sidhartha Sankar Kar, who acting on a tip off led the operation to seize the contraband.
“The consignment was booked in New Delhi under fake names. It was supposed to be smuggled onward to Bangladesh. We have handed over the contraband to customs officials for necessary action,” Kar told Inditop.
No one has been arrested so far. A senior customs official said investigations were on.
The active ingredients of Phensidyl include codeine phosphate and ephedrine. It is often used as a recreational narcotic and depressant.
Some people in India and Bangladesh are addicted to Phensidyl, popularly known in Bangladesh as Phensi, inchi, dyle, fanta, fantoos. The drug is banned in Bangladesh, but not in India which is the only country to produce Phensidyl.
