New Delhi, Feb 3 (IANS) American engineering major GE’s aviation arm GE Aviation Thursday signed a 20 year technical solutions agreement with the national carrier Air India (AI).
The agreement to expand AI’s maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility in Mumbai, to include GE90 engine overhauls value was not disclosed.
‘As part of the solution agreement, GE will provide Air India with comprehensive material support, training and assistance on overhaul,’ the company said in a statement.
Earlier, AI had ordered 23 GE90 engine-powered Boeing 777 aircraft in 2005 and currently operates 20 of these aircraft with the remaining three aircraft to be delivered in the next few years.
According to the airline, the agreement will help it save cost and time on overhauling of engines, while it will also be utilized for servicing third parties.
‘Three engine overhauls were recently completed, saving us shipping costs and also reducing our turnaround time significantly. This will help us as we prepare to take on third-party work in the facility,’ said K.M. Unni, board member, Air India.
Air India plans to build a new MRO facility in Nagpur which will also include GE90 engine testing capabilities.
