Chandigarh, April 9 (Inditop.com) The Haryana government Friday banned paddy sowing and planting before May 15 and June 15, respectively, in a bid to prevent further depletion of ground water in the state.
Ground water has been depleting fast in Haryana due to indiscriminate use of the natural resource and scanty rainfall over the past few years.
An agriculture department spokesman said the government banned paddy nurseries and plantation under the Preservation of Sub-soil Water Act, 2009.
He said farmers who violate the order would be punished under the act. Their crops will be destroyed and a penalty of Rs.10,000 per hectare per month would be imposed.
