New Delhi, Jan 10 (IANS) The total imports of sensitive items during April-October 2010 grew by 14.1 percent, and stood at Rs.40,499 crore as compared to Rs.35,487 crore during the corresponding period of last year, the commerce ministry said Monday.

According to an official statement, the surge in imports of sensitive items was led by edible oils, automobiles, rubber, milk products, marble, granite, alcoholic beverages and food grains.

‘In the edible oils segment, the import has increased from Rs.14,205 crore last year to Rs.15,882 crore for the corresponding period of this year,’ the statement said.

Meanwhile, the import of pulses, fruits, vegetables (including nuts), cotton, silk, spices, tea and coffee declined during the period.

The statement added that the gross import of all commodities during April-October 2010 stood at Rs.889,827 crore as compared to Rs.743,469 crore during the like period of last year.

‘Import of sensitive items constitutes 4.8 percent and 4.6 percent of the gross imports during last (fiscal) year and current year, respectively,’ the statement added.
