Bangalore, Jan 26 (Inditop.com) Karnataka Governor Hans Raj Bhardwaj Tuesday called upon the government to ensure that the state maintained its lead in information technology (IT) and biotechnology (BT).

“As a frontrunner in IT, BT and nano-technology, it is imperative that the initial lead gained by the state and Bangalore as its tech hub is maintained and efforts are made to attract investment in the state,” Bhardwaj said in his Republic Day address here.

Noting that Karnataka was a leading state in the country on the industrialisation front, the governor said many foreign dignitaries had expressed business interests in the state during his interaction with them over the last six months.

“The investment climate in the state must be favourable to Indian and foreign investors to make Karnataka a preferred destination for new or additional investments,” Bhardwaj said after unfurling the tricolour at the Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw parade ground.

At the same time, he urged the state government to maintain a balanced growth by ensuring uniform development and socio-economic growth across the state, especially in the hitherto neglected districts.

“Regional imbalances in a highly developed state like Karnataka do not augur well for the long-term development of the state and its people.

In this context, the governor expressed concern over the acute shortage of power, which was an impediment in the growth of agriculture, industry and services.

“I hope the power situation in the state will improve. I will also impress upon the central government to allot the state a higher share of power it is entitled to,” Bhardwaj pointed out.

As chancellor of universities across the state, the governor advised the state government to ensure the universities had full autonomy to function and maintain academic excellence.

“The provisions in the respective acts and rules must be adhered to. The trend to dilute the chancellor’s role does not augur well for these institutions,” he added.

Referring to the explosive growth of Bangalore over the last two decades, Bhardwaj said as a favoured investment destination in the knowledge sector, the phenomenal growth had thrown several challenges such as law and order, traffic management, housing etc.

“As a unique city, Bangalore has become a brand ambassador for India. With its knowledge industry and a salubrious climate, the city is a sought-after destination for Indian and overseas investors,” he added.
