New Delhi, Sep 27 (IANS) Mercedes-Benz India Monday said it will set up a bus body-building unit at its Pune-based plant by the second half of next year to expand into the high-end city buses segment.

According to the company, the market for high-end city buses is expected to grow by 20 percent each year. It is estimated at approximately 500 units per annum now.

‘We would now like to expand into the city buses segment, making luxury travel affordable for public transport users of the urban population,’ said Wilfried Aulbur, chief executive and managing director of the company.

Aulbur said the Pune plant will have a capacity of 700-900 units per annum.

The body-building unit will initailly focus on low-floor city buses which are in demand in metros.

‘Initially, we will be making bodies for low-floor city buses, and in future, we may look at other categories,’ he added.
