New Delhi, Aug 1 (IANS) The government has sought financial assistance of about $1.5 billion from the World Bank to improve power infrastructure in the northeast, Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said Monday.

The aid will be used to improve transmission and distribution network in the states of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura, Shinde said in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.

The proposal submitted through the department of economic affairs was recommended to the World Bank in November last year for consideration in three tranches of $500 million each. A team from the bank has already visited the states in June 2011.
