Chennai, Nov 29 (IANS) Central and state electricity regulators are looking for ways to reduce demand during peak hours, including charging higher tariff, an official said.
At a meeting of the chairmen of the central and state electricity regulatory commissions here Sunday, a broad consensus was arrived at controlling peak time demand.
‘The discussion was on devising mechanisms where consumers are encouraged to reduce their power consumption during peak hours,’ an official of Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) told IANS.
He said a differential tariff regime – higher cost during peak hours – should replace the present pricing mechanism.
The official also added that US-based firm Honeywell had done pilot studies in Greater Noida and similar projects will be implemented in states like Maharashtra as well.
On the issue of open access – allowing states to buy power from each other – he said State Electricity Boards (SEBs) still have an ‘old hangover’ which hinders its implementation.
