Jaipur, Oct 2 (IANS) The Rajasthan government Sunday launched a project to provide free medicines to people below and above the poverty line.
Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot inaugurated the scheme on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s 142nd birth anniversary at a health centre in Sawai Madhopur district, some 170 km from this state capital.
In the first phase, 200 types of generic medicines will be provided free of cost, said Gehlot.
Fourteen states have already launched a similar scheme but most of them started with only about 50 types of medicines, Gehlot said.
‘It is an achievement for Rajasthan that we started off with 200 medicines. In the second phase, we aim at providing 400 types of medicines free of cost,’ Gehlot added.
The drugs will be distributed through special counters to be set up at over 13,800 government health centres, dispensaries and hospitals across the state.
