New Delhi, Sep 23 (IANS) The central government has given over Rs.217 crore to five public sector units (PSUs) for construction of rural roads in Bihar under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), the rural development ministry said Thursday.

The state-run firms, which have been given these funds include the National Projects Construction Corporation Ltd (Rs.60 crore), the IRCON International Ltd (Rs.4.19 crore) and the Central Public Works Department (Rs.46.80 crore).

The other two PSUs involved in the project are: the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (Rs.88 crore) and the National Buildings Construction Corporation Ltd (Rs.18.27 crore), said the ministry.

It added that tripartite agreements have been signed for this purpose between the ministry, the Bihar government and the central PSUs.

The PSUs would build Bihar rural roads as per the guidelines of the PMGSY, which is a fully sponsored central government scheme.

It envisages providing all-weather roads to all habitations with a population of 500 people and more in the rural areas and about 250 people and more in the hilly states, tribal areas and desert areas.
