Kolkata, July 28 (IANS) Union Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahay Saturday said a roadmap will be chalked out so that both tourism and conservation of tigers can be carried out simultaneously.
He was speaking against the backdrop of a recent Supreme Court verdict banning tourism activities in core areas of tiger reserves.
“We cannot compromise on the conservation of tigers in the country. We need to chalk out a way so that both tiger conservation and tourism can happen simultaneously,” Sahay said on the sidelines of a programme here.
The Supreme Court Tuesday banned tourism in core areas of 41 tiger reserves.
Sahay said that it was the poachers who disturb the tigers.
He expressed concern over the low number of foreign tourist visiting India.
“In a country with a population of over a billion, only 60 lakh tourists visit every year. We need to double the number of inbound tourists,” he said.
