Mumbai, Dec 18 (IANS) A benchmark index of the Indian equities markets closed with modest gains in a truncated week of trading.

The 30-share sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) rose 1.82 percent or 355.96 points to close at 19,864.85.

At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the 50-share S&P CNX Nifty also moved up, gaining 1.56 percent to close the week at 5,948.75 points.

Broader markets too ended among gains with the BSE midcap index closing 2.19 percent higher, while the BSE smallcap index rose 2.6 percent.

Among top weekly gainers on the Sensex were Wipro, up 7.8 percent at Rs.469.80; ACC, up 5.7 percent at Rs.1,075.25; TCS, up 5.5 percent at Rs.1,140.40; and Tata Steel, up 4.9 percent at Rs.658.85.

Top losers included M&M, down 7.3 percent at Rs.732.60; Hero Honda, down 4.6 percent at Rs.1,679.10; Cipla, down 3.6 percent at Rs.356.55; and HDFC Bank, down 3.5 percent at Rs.2,200.35.

According to data available with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), foreign institutional investors sold stocks worth $247.4 million during the week.

Asian markets closed on a lacklustre note after trading volatile during the week.

Japan’s Nikkei closed on a flat note, nudging up 0.07 percent to close at 10,303.83 points.

The Chinese Shanghai Composite index closed at 2,893.74 points almost unchanged from its previous, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng ended 0.2 percent up at 22,714.85 points.

European stocks retreated Friday after Moody’s Investors Services downgraded Ireland’s credit rating.

The FTSE 100 fell 0.16 percent down at 5,871.75 points, the German DAX slumped 0.60 percent to 6,982.45 points and the French CAC 40 closed 0.54 percent down at 3,867.35.

The American stocks ended the week mixed. The Dow Jones Industrial average closed 0.06 percent down at 11,491.90 points.

However, the S&P 500 moved 0.08 percent higher at 1,243.91 points and the Nasdaq Composite closed 0.21 percent higher at 2,642.97 points.
