New Delhi, Sep 1 (IANS) The government Wednesday appointed six lawmakers as members of the national Shipping Board, a permanent statutory body set up to advise the government on issues relating to shipping sector and its development.

The six members appointed to the board – for a period of two years each – included four from the Lok sabha and two from the Rajya Sabha, said an official statement from the ministry of shipping.

Those appointed from the Lok Sabha are Somendra Nath Mitra from West Bengal, Rajendrasinh Rana from Gujarat, A. Sampath from Kerala and Hamdullah Sayeed from Lakshadweep.

The two Rajya Sabha Mps appointed to the board are K.V.P. Ramchandra Rao from Andhra Pradesh and K. B. Shanappa from Karnataka, the statement added.

The NSB is currently deliberating on piracy and maritime security, coastal shipping policy and setting up of state maritime boards.
