Ludhiana (Punjab), Oct 4 (Inditop.com) Acting swiftly, the Punjab Police have solved a day-old bank robbery in Batala district with the arrest of a state government employee, officials said Sunday.

District police chief Sukhchain Singh Gill told Inditop: “We have arrested Hem Raj, who is an assistant lineman in PSEB (Punjab State Electricity Board). We have recovered the amount from him that he had stolen from a bank in Batala.”

“We arrested him after a tip-off. We have informed the Batala police about this arrest and will hand over the accused to them for further interrogation,” Gill added.

According to police, Hem Raj had fled with a bag containing Rs.2.3 million (Rs.23 lakh) from the State Bank of Patiala branch in Shastri Nagar in Batala district Saturday.

The bank’s head cashier Hardip Singh had withdrawn Rs.2.3 million from the locker room to put into an ATM outside. Singh put the cash on a table and went inside the manger’s room to get the keys to the ATM. In the meantime, a youth fled with the bag.

Batala police had rounded up Singh and the security guard of the bank for questioning.

“During interrogation, we will try to find out if any bank employee was working in connivance with the arrested accused,” a Batala police official told Inditop.
