Lucknow, June 27 (Inditop.com) At least seven labourers involved in sand mining near an Uttar Pradesh river were killed when the river bank caved in Saturday, police said.

The tragedy occured in the Metiuala village in Bijnor district, about 350 km from here, “where a group of labourers was carrying out sand mining along the Ratnam river”, Superintendent of Police Raj Kumar told IANS.

Police rescued three of labourers, he added. Police are not sure if the sand mining operation was legal.

“We have initiated an inquiry to know whether the mining along the river was sanctioned by the authorities or it was was illegal,” said Kumar.

“If the mining is found to be illegal, strict action would be taken against the contractors who had employed the labourers for it,” he added.
