Lucknow, Oct 5 (Inditop.com) Three people were arrested for trying to marry off a 10-year-old girl to a physically handicapped 25-year-old man in Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri district, police said Monday.
According to police, Chhote Lal, a farmer and resident of Chachha village, fixed the marriage of his daughter to Jaiveer of the same village for a sum of Rs.200,000.
“The marriage was about to take place Sunday at a temple on the outskirts of the village. However, after being tipped-off by some social activists, we reached the temple in time and stopped the marriage,” Inspector R.K. Sharma told Inditop by phone. Mainpuri is 300 km from here.
“We have registered a case against Jaiveer, his father and Chhote Lal under relevant sections of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. The three have been arrested,” the officer said.
