New Delhi, Feb 29 (IANS) With campaigning closed a day before elections being held after a gap of four years, candidates Wednesday awaited their fate as the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) geared to go to polls Thursday.
The highlight of the elections, the presidential debate took place Feb 28.
“The elections are taking place after a gap of four years as the last elections were held here in 2007. So, everyone is excited, including the candidates,” Zico Dasgupta, constesting for the president’s post, told IANS. He represents the Students Federation of India and the All India Students’ Federation.
Four office-bearers and 31 others will be elected in balloting scheduled for March 1.
The Supreme Court suspended the JNU Students Union elections in 2008, citing violations of the Lyngdoh Committee’s recommendations on students’ union polls in educational institutions.
However, on December 8, 2011, the apex court revoked the stay as an interim measure and gave certain exemptions, for instance raising the upper age limit to 30 years, waiving the requirement of 75 percent attendance for a candidate to contest elections, and allowing the use of photocopies of pamphlets in poll campaign.
