Kochi, March 30 (IANS) ‘DAMs – The Lethal Water Bombs’, a 21-minute documentary about Mullaperiyar dam, has been declared best documentary (Short) by the Los Angeles Cinema Festival of Hollywood Spring 2011.

The award will be given away at the White Fire Theater in Los Angeles April 6.

The film is directed by Sohan Roy, a naval architect by profession, and gives a scientific explanation on the disastrous nature of the Mullaperiyar dam and a warning to those who turn a blind eye towards the reality of a possible natural disaster.

Roy’s office told IANS that they received the information about the award Tuesday and that it has now been put up on festival website.

Kerala and Tamil Nadu have been at loggerheads over the present Mullaperiyar dam built under an agreement signed in 1886 between the then Maharaja of Travancore and the British administration.

While the dam is located in Kerala’s Idukki district, it serves Tamil Nadu. In recent years, Tamil Nadu has demanded that the storage capacity of the dam to be raised from 136 feet (41.5 m) to 142 feet (43 m) to meet the increasing demand of water for irrigation.
