Santo Domingo, April 26 (Inditop.com/EFE) More than 1,200 young athletes participating in an event in the Dominican Republic fell sick and 22 of them were hospitalised due to food poisoning, media report said.
The athletes between the age of nine and 18 were competing in the 12th Don Bosco Salesian National Games in Santo Domingo. Organisers suspect that the tainted food was served at lunch Friday, the El Nacional newspaper reported.
The food served to the athletes Friday “was not transported on time and, by the time they served it, seven hours had gone by since they cooked it and packed it in disposable plates,” Don Bosco Salesian National Games director Tomas Polanco said.
Twenty-two of the athletes were under observation at Santo Domingo’s Armed Forces General Hospital.
