Lucknow, July 1 (Inditop.com) A pregnant woman was allegedly denied treatment in a government hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Ambedkar Nagar district because she was HIV positive, following which she delivered the baby outside the gates of the hospital, media reports said Wednesday.
According to reports, the 28-year-old woman, who is a resident of Jahageeraganj locality in Amdedkar Nagar, Tuesday went to Mahatma Jyotiba Phule district hospital.
However, doctors and other medical staff refused to treat the woman as she was HIV positive and asked the family to take her somewhere else. While the woman was on her way to another hospital, she delivered the baby just outside the gates of the government hospital.
Ambedkar Nagar is about 160 km from here.
District chief medical officer Liaqat Ali said: “An enquiry has been initiated to investigate the incident. It is yet to be conclusively established that treatment was denied because the patient was HIV positive.”
Asked about the condition of the mother and the newborn, Ali said: “They are under our supervision. Both of them are doing fine.”
