GREEN DAY’s highly-anticipated punk rock opera AMERICAN IDIOT is proving to be a hit with fans – theatre bosses have extended its run by three weeks due to “unprecedented demand”.
The rock musical, inspired by the band’s 2004 Grammy-winning album of the same name, will debut at the Berkeley Repertory Theater in Berkeley, California on Friday (04Sep09).
And already high demand has pushed its initial closing date back from 11 October (09) to 1 November (09).
The early success has prompted rumours frontman Billie Joe Armstrong wants to showcase the spectacular in New York – following his strong praise of Tony-winning director Michael Maye.
After previews earlier this year (09) Armstrong told reporters, “It’s incredible… I couldn’t f**king believe it…. all those voices singing your songs at you. There’s no intermission. It’s just blasting straight through for 75 minutes… He (Mayer) stuck to the spirit of the record, which is pulverising.”
