New Delhi, Aug 24 (IANS) The government Friday appointed Lt. Gen. Ranbir Singh, currently posted with the country’s Strategic Forces Command, as the next director general of Assam Rifles, a paramilitary force guarding India’s northeastern states against insurgency.
Lt.Gen. Singh, an infantry officer from the Bihar Regiment, will be on deputation with the home ministry that administers Assam Rifles.
Commissioned in 1975, the officer has over the last 37 years been in both command and staff appointments including leading an infantry battalion in Jammu and Kashmir, a mountain brigade in Sikkim and an infantry division at Meerut.
An alumnus of Sanawar-based Lawrence School and Wellington-based Defence Services Staff College, he has been an instructor at the Khadakwasla-based National Defence Academy, Mhow-based Infantry School, and the Indian Military Training Team in Bhutan.
He has also served as India’s defence attache in China.
