Meerut (Uttar Pradesh), Feb 28 (IANS) Six people, including college students from Ghaziabad and Noida, involved in a drug-peddling racket have been arrested here with heroin worth around Rs.1 crore, police said Monday.
The six men were nabbed Sunday from Partapur, in a joint operation carried out by the special operations group (SOG) and the district police.
‘Of the six men, some are pursuing courses from colleges and educational institutes in Ghaziabad and Noida,’ police inspector B.P. Pushkar told reporters Monday in Meerut, some 450 km from Lucknow.
‘All the six, aged between 22-24 years, are natives of Uttar Pradesh and were nabbed while they were waiting for some of their clients to hand over the illegal consignment of drugs,’ he added.
According to police, preliminary investigations reveal the six have been in the illegal trade for the last three-four years and were primarily used to supply drugs to western districts of Uttar Pradesh and the national capital region.
‘Investigations are being carried out to gather more information about the racket for which the six used to work for,’ said Pushkar.
