New Delhi, Dec 20 (IANS) Commending the United Progressive Alliance government for enhancing India’s global stature, the ruling Congress party Monday touted the government’s achievement in putting terrorism on the global agenda and asked Pakistan to dismantle militant outfits operating from its territory.
‘Pakistan must deliver with sincerity on its assurances to dismantle the terror outfits, not to allow the use of its territory for terror attacks in India and bring to justice the perpetrators/masterminds responsible for the Mumbai carnage,’ said the Congress in its resolution on foreign policy passed at the 83rd plenary here.
It said that the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack had ‘negatively impacted’ relations between India and Pakistan, ‘in which we have invested a great deal over the years for the sake of peace in our region’.
The party commended the UPA government for exposing before the international community the syndicate of terror operating from Pakistani soil.
‘The UPA government has effectively brought the threat of terrorism on the global agenda and has mobilised global support in condemning terrorism as an instrument of state policy,’ the resolution said.
The all-embracing resolution on foreign policy reiterated India’s commitment to Afro-Asian solidarity and the non-aligned movement and contained a reiteration of its known positions on a range of issues including India’s commitment to the Palestinian cause and to the establishment of a multi-polar world.
The resolution listed a series of achievements of the UPA government in the last six years, saying its foreign policy has ‘upheld India’s engagement with all its strategic partners and major countries of the world, consolidating existing relations and forging new partnerships’.
Basking in the glow of the US declaration of support for India’s candidature for a permanent UN Security Council (UNSC) seat, the party struck a self-congratulatory tone, commending the government for enhancing India’s global stature.
‘This session of the AICC has noted with satisfaction and considerable appreciation the government’s efforts to enhance India’s stature in the comity of nations,’ said the resolution.
The party commended the government for mobilizing global support for India’s bid for a permanent UNSC seat and touted it as it key achievement of India’s foreign policy, which it stressed is ‘a blend of idealism and pragmatism’.
‘India is of the considered view that the composition of the reformed Council should be democratic and inclusive in character, reflecting contemporary global reality,’ said the party.
Mapping out the path ahead, the resolution said: ‘The traditional leadership role of India in leading from the front the Third World and movements for emancipation of Asia and Africa have evolved into a 21st century leadership for an equitable global order.’
