Agartala, July 8 (IANS) The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) has decided to send over 10 lakh e-mails to President Pratibha Patil to demand the extradition of former Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson from the US for the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy.
DYFI, the youth wing of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), has organised a programme here Thursday to formally start sending e-mails to the president from all over the country.
‘In our e-mails we will urge the president to ask the central government to take urgent, appropriate steps for extradition of Anderson from the US and award suitable punishment for the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy,’ DYFI Tripura state committee president Tapas Datta told reporters.
Datta said: ‘Of the 10 lakh e-mails to be dispatched to the president from across the country, 100,000 will be mailed from northeastern India during the month-long campaign.’
The DYFI will also set up mock courts in urban areas to try Anderson.
‘The mock court trials would be conducted during July-August,’ said DYFI Tripura state committee secretary Amal Chakraborty.
