Srinagar, May 30 (IANS) A trooper of the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) committed suicide inside his camp in north Kashmir’s Ganderbal district Sunday, police said.
The trooper of the 118 battalion of the CRPF committed suicide inside the camp in Gund village of Ganderbal.
‘A case has been registered and we are investigating the matter,’ a police officer said here.
Incidents of suicides and fratricidal shootouts have been witnessed among paramilitary and army troopers deployed in Jammu and Kashmir since the separatist violence began 20 years back.
Continued separation from families, long and difficult duty hours in hostile environments, and lack of recreational facilities are seen as reasons for such extreme acts.
Counsellors engaged to address the menace have suggested periodic leaves, creation of recreational facilities inside the camps and better command and control structure as remedies to check such incidents among the troops deployed here.
