New Delhi, Sep 20 (IANS) The enforcement of curbs on motorists from using road lanes reserved for Commonwealth Games athletes and officials has been put off till Sep 23, a Delhi traffic police official said Monday.
The enforcement of the curbs has been delayed for a couple of days as the participants are expected to start arriving Sep 23, the official said.
‘The curbs have still not been put to practice since the athletes have still not arrived. We expect them to arrive on Sep 23, and that is when the restrictions will be put in place,’ said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).
A slew of guidelines have been issued to motorists asking them to avoid the Games lanes failing which they would be fined Rs.2,000.
Some 7,000 participants and officials from 71 countries are expected to attend the Oct 3-14 Commonwealth Games, India’s biggest sporting event after the 1982 Asian Games.
Traffic police have also asked motorists to give way to emergency vehicles like ambulances, police vans and fire tenders during the Games. If motorists fail to give way to the emergency vehicles, they would be fined Rs.100.
The Organising Committee of the Games has divided transport services for athletes and officials into different groups.
The first group, T1, consists of a dedicated service of around 485 cars with drivers, which will transport delegates from their accommodation to venues and back.
The second group, T2, will be a pool of 1,000 cars available through a call car service while the third group, T3, will consist of 349 dedicated AC buses for the athletes.
Twenty-five routes have been identified for transporting the athletes. A separate bus service will be provided for media and technical officials. The transport services will be available from Sep 23.
