New Delhi, Sep 25 (IANS) Flood threat in Delhi receded as water level in the Yamuna river started going down Saturday, days after many homes were inundated in the national capital, an official here said.
‘The water level is expected to recede further during the day,’ said an official of the flood department.
This has come as a respite for the residents of low-lying areas along the banks of the Yamuna in Delhi, who have been living in flooded homes or under the flood threat. The reversal of drainage water and overflowing Yamuna caused severe water-logging in these areas.
Many low-lying areas were inundated and people in areas like Mukherjee Nagar and Civil Lines even used boats for plying.
The Yamuna’s water level started receding even though the river was flowing well above the danger mark of 204.83 metres. The water level, which crossed the critical 207-metre mark, reached 206.10 metres Saturday morning.
The level rose alarmingly after Haryana released over 7.44 lakh cusecs water from the Hathinikund Barrage in Yamunanagar district, breaking a record of 32 years.
