Chandigarh, Nov 9 (IANS) Overloaded vehicles running on Haryana’s roads could land their owners and operators behind bars, transport officials here said Tuesday.

‘These vehicles, besides causing serious accidents, are also damaging the roads,’ a spokesman of the state’s transport department said.

The department has issued a notice stating that the owners, permit holders, drivers, cleaners and other persons related with the loading and operating of such vehicles were committing an offence under the Prevention of Damage to the Public Property Act, 1984, he added.

Ther spokesman said the offenders can be awarded a rigorous imprisonment for a minimum of six months, extendable to five years, in addition to a fine.
