Chandigarh, Dec 2 (IANS) Goods worth millions of rupees were burnt Thursday morning in a major fire at a thread factory of the Trident group near Barnala town in Punjab, police said.
Firemen were trying to control the blaze and the reasons for the fire were yet to be ascertained, police said.
Police sources said the loss due to the fire could be Rs.100-150 million (Rs.10-15 crore). Barnala town is about 250 km from here.
The Trident group is one of the biggest towel manufacturers in the world with a big export market, especially in the US. Its clients include retail giants like Wal-Mart, JC Penny, Target, Sears, Guest Supply, Reebok, United Colours of Benetton and Ikea.
The Rs.25 billion Trident group conglomerate has interests in home textiles, yarn, paper, chemicals, IT and energy. The group headquarters are in the industrial hub of Ludhiana, 110 km from here.
